Hydrogen Engine stop giving power

david pelletier shared this bug 5 years ago
Outdated

after getting my ship running and have some ice, my power levels over load about after 5 mins of flight and i fall to the ground. after i try every thing to get the thing running again and i failed. i filled up on ice, took out all items out of cargo, grind down the engine and h2o gen and reweld.

Hydrogen Engine seam to be bugged someway to stop giving power to the ship after a time and wont power it at all after no matter what i do

iv built 3 ships in survive mode and the same thing happens after about 5 mins of being running

am i doing something wrong?

thanks,

Had the same thing happen to me.

I understand that sometimes if the ship doesn't have enough power/fuel it can fall out of the sky and this feels a lot like that, but it is not. When the inertial damping uses up too much power stopping the forward momentum and doesn't fire the downward thrust, etc... Except I was actively avoiding that but having the inertial dampers turned off, and was mashing the space key to fire only my downward thrust and was still accelerating downward.

The ship had about 75% of its hydrogen tank filled, and was normally able to lift its weight quite easily, so firing the downward thrust should have slowed then reversed my descent. Instead I continued to accelerate as if the engines were not firing at all.

I built the ship to be a miner, but I was flying to an ore site so it was empty and actually significantly lighter than it was designed to handle and no additional mass was being added when it fell out of the sky.

I feel like this bug has existed for a while but keeps getting masked by legitimate ways a ship can fail like losing power etc…

I have had this happen to me a lot actually but I always blamed it on user error, assuming I lost track of power or didn’t have enough thrust (and if I am honest that was definitely the case for some of them). But it seems to happen so often, even when I am actively building and piloting to avoid it that I am convinced that there is a real bug here too.

Tentative repro:

-Build a small ship with balanced thrust

-Turn off inertial damping

-Accelerate to max speed

-Attempt to slow down and land without inertial damping

Repo rate: 1/7

I was… Kind of hoping to give you a solid repro but the number of attempts without a failure kind of makes me think it's a bug even more now. If I had simply screwed up and lost track of power or hydrogen, I should have seen the issue again quickly. But I had created a template of the ship before it crashed so I was able to test with the exact same design with the exact same fuel and energy levels. I flew the same route I flew during the crash 6 times in a row without refueling or recharging (in survival mode), which indicates to me that the ship had more than enough fuel and power to make the one way trip that crashed.

To test I also intentionally ran out the fuel and watched the hydrogen thrusters turn off. That didn’t happen during the crash, they were still lit, just not providing thrust during the crash.

Bug did occur in multiplayer, and I attempted to repro in single player, so could it be a multiplayer issue? Game forgets to send the go single to the server? I was kind of mashing the up button at the end though so I would have expected some change.
