Memory issue not fixed.

Bruce Ferguson shared this bug 17 months ago
Solved

I hadn't experienced the dreaded out of memory issue until AFTER this latest update, version 1.000.004. I can't save my game, and I can only load back in after exiting if I restart my PS5. I have 257.9 GB of free space on my SSD, 667.2 GB on the console's storage, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Hello Engineer,

We're aware of the issue where deleting saved games in-game doesn't remove them from Console Storage. The issue has been fixed in the latest release, but you still might have lingering save files in your Console Storage that cannot be seen in-game.

Please verify how much Space Engineers saved data is taking. You can do that via Playstation Settings/Storage/Console Storage/Saved Data/Delete

We can confirm that the save file limit is 1.08Gb.

Thank you.

I'm showing 988.1 MB of saved data in console storage. How would I go about deleting any lingering save files if there are any, without deleting my current save?

Hello Engineer,

There's an icon of a pencil on a list to the right side of the size of Space Engineers title. By selecting that button you should be able to delete separate save files one at a time. We don't recommend deleting the Settings.

Thank you.

I'm on PS5. I don't see that option anywhere.

Does it matter that I have it saved on an SSD? Do I need to move it to console?

Hello Engineer,

Could you please attach a screenshot of a menu located at Settings/Storage/Console Storage/Saved Data?

Thank you.

Hello Engineer,

Could you please check if you have the ability to delete separate files following the PlayStation guide at this link?

No, it doesn't give me the option.

I started a brand new save after wiping my old save files from my PS5. I only have one save, no blueprints, nothing, and I got the "there is not enough space for the operation" on my new save. This wasn't an issue until the latest "fix" and I'm not happy that I have to keep starting over from scratch.

Hello Engineer,

Please delete all saved data via Settings/Storage/Console Storage/Saved Data/Delete. To retain a specific save you'd like to keep you can publish it to mod.io.

The issue where deleting saves via in-game tools has been resolved in the latest release, you should be able to manage saved data from in-game after deleting it via the Playstation system once.

We can confirm that 1.08Gb limit is intentional.

Thank you.

That does me no good, as I can't get a blueprint to post to mod.io because there's not enough memory to perform that action. 1 Gb isn't much at all.

Hello Engineer,

You can publish a save file to mod.io as well.

Thank you.

I can't, that's what I'm telling you. I have tried, it tells me there isn't enough memory. I deleted all of my previous saved data from my PS5, even deleted it from the cloud, and started a brand new game on Friday after the update. I started building a new ship in creative mode, no other saves, and got the "there isn't enough memory to perform this function" error. At that point, I thought I would upload my ship blueprint and wait for fix before I continued building, I couldn't upload the blueprint.

Hello Engineer,

In the last screenshot you've posted you had 988.1Mb in the Saved Data. Have you deleted all saved data from the Console Storage via PlayStation's interface since? Could you confirm that you're getting the memory error after deleting all saved data? Is one save taking the entire 1.08Gb of space somehow? Are you using any mods?

Thank you.

You don't listen, do you?

I deleted all saved data from my console, which I've said several times now, and started all over. The latest screenshot I sent was 944 Mb, not 988, and it was after speaking with you and deleting all saved data and starting a brand new game.

photo

It was 947 Mb, not 944, my mistake. The original before deleting saved data was 988. The 947 was after deleting saved data and starting over. I started building a large grid ship, not even a huge one (as you can see in the picture), and encountered the error after starting the new save. No, I do not use mods, I don't trust them.

Hello Engineer,

So just to have the correct information and we're both on the same page. You've selected Space Engineers in the screen displayed in your screenshots, pressed delete. At that point Space Engineers have disappeared from the list of applications with Saved Data. However after you launched the game for the first time it went back up to 947.9Mb? Is that the correct sequence of events?

Thank you.

That is correct, yes.

Hello Engineer,

You've mentioned that you've deleted all saved data from Cloud Storage as well. Could you please try deleting Saved Data from both Console and Cloud Storage at the same time?

Console Storage should not have more than approximately 5.25Mb after the first launch of the game.

You've mentioned you don't have any blueprints, does that also include subscribed blueprints from mod.io?

Thank you.

I deleted both cloud and console data at the same when I restarted on Friday before starting over. I do recall the file size being 5+ Mb after that. And no, I have absolutely no blueprints whatsoever, even from mod.io. I haven't even agreed to use mod.io since starting the game on May 11th. I really don't want to delete my latest cloud save, because I really don't want to have to start this ship all over again for the third time. It looks simple enough, but it's taken me 22 versions and 2 complete wipes to get it where it is now because my understanding of the game advanced each time. My memory is pretty good, but even it has a limit, and I can't save a blueprint because of the current memory issues.

In my research over the weekend, I discovered there are several people on your support site, on Twitter, on Reddit, on YouTube, and even in my Space Engineers group on Facebook, that are experiencing the exact same issues. Mine isn't an isolated incident. The common issue seems to be the PS5 and Sony not letting players delete individual save files, something that can be done on PS4. Even deleting all saved data on PS5 doesn't fix the issue, as the next time you start over your save grows exponentially large after building very little. I don't understand how a ship containing less than 4,500 blocks can create a file as large as 947 Mb, but that's what's happening. I have auto save turned off, as I want to be able to go back to a previous manual save if I do something wrong. Maybe each time I manually save on the same file it's somehow doubling up and making it grow exponentially? I don't have an explanation for it, but my game is unplayable and I can't even create or save a blueprint because the file is too close to the 1 Gb limit. I will reiterate that this is a brand new save created after having wiped all saved data on console and the cloud (after the update on Friday), there is only 1 saved game with a simple 4,500 large grid block space ship in creative mode. At one point I even deleted the default base on the planet, thinking that was somehow adding to the file size, and built several km away from where it was. That didn't change anything, nor did that base deletion save, because I had already reached the memory limit when I tried deleting the default base nearby. I tried to make a blueprint of my ship after the memory error occurred, hoping I could save it, wipe my console and cloud data, start another new save, then download the blueprint so I could at least keep working on the ship on a brand new save. It wouldn't let me create a blueprint to save because of the memory issue. I don't know if there's any more information I can give you, but aside from trying once again to wipe all of my console and cloud data and starting over yet again, I'm willing to give any assistance I can to help resolve this matter. I really don't want to lose my progress yet again. Yes, it's a simple ship, but it also represents many many days of planning and building; and no, I really don't want to do it all yet again. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I am already on the verge of insanity. Lol. I bought this game because, to me, it was the No Man's Sky killer. I played No Man's Sky for 6.5 years and loved every minute of the almost 3,000 hours I put into it. Space Engineers offered a freedom to build that which No Man's Sky didn't; namely my own ships, rovers, even Space stations; and it has a much higher complexity limit. No Man's Sky limits players to 17,000 parts per save with a 5,000 part per base upload limit. You can have up to 15 saves. The similarity of open world sandbox between both games, but with Space Engineers having far more options, is why I knew I had to have this game. No Man's Sky became boring after discovering/exploring the dozen or so different biomes available, and all that was left to do is build bases if you wanted to not get bored. Many players had been asking Hello Games to let us build our own ships, rather than have to hunt for a specific style/type and color, or at least customize existing ships in some way. We had also asked to be able to at least takeover existing space stations, since they wouldn't let us build our own. As someone that spent most of his 3,000 hours building bases, I eventually ran out of base building ideas to try and No Man's Sky became less and less appealing. If I can't build in Space Engineers without hitting a memory limit that shrinks each time I start over, then Space Engineers is unplayable. Something has to give.

Hello Engineer,

We are investigating the issue. Could you please tell us if the world you used had standard settings other than auto-saving? It was Earth Planet Custom World in Creative Mode if we understood correctly from your screenshots and description?

Thank you.

Yes, it was the Earth planet in creative.

As for settings, I know I turned off sun rotation and unchecked weather. Other than that, I think I left everything the way it was.

I apologize for the lack of response, but I am unable to do what you requested because I currently don't have a PS5. I had to send it in under warranty because it won't boot up anymore. I had to go back to playing on PS4. The PS4 version of SE works great, just so you know. I haven't had any of the memory issues that I encountered with the PS5 version. I don't know how long it'll be before my PS5 is repaired/replaced, but I have faith the memory error will be resolved by the time I get it back, as you have had SE working great on PC for nearly 10 years and on Xbox for nearly 3. I honestly don't think the issue lies with you, I think it lies with Sony and the way they configured the PS5 to not let owners delete individual save files like they could on PS4. I'm definitely not knowledgeable when it comes to that stuff, but if you have SE working so well on PC, Xbox, and PS4, then I don't think you're the problem. I've considered starting a petition to get Sony to change the way save files work on PS5 to the way they work on PS4, as it is pretty inconvenient to not be able to delete only the files I want rather than all. Anyways, thanks for your fast responses and attempts to resolve this issue. Keep up the good work!

Hello,

Today we are releasing a hotfix (your game version will not change), for PlayStation 5 (PlayStation 4 version will be released later). We ask everyone who has problems saving on this console to please update. Please clear your local data before running it. Beware, you will also lose any (old) existing saves by doing this.

Procedure:

- Settings/Storage/Saved data/PS5 games/

- Select Delete

- Select the Space Engineers and press the Delete button

It is necessary to start from the beginning. This should prevent any recurrence of this issue.

This update should fix the gradual increase of save file size when saving repeatedly.

Please let us know if continue to experience any issues. Thank you for your continued patience, and for working through this process with us.

Kind Regards

Keen Software House

Thank you for being so diligent with this issue. I will borrow a PS5 from my friend and test it, since mine is for warranty repair.
