You can survive on wolf loot but not spider or signal loot.
Wolves drop everything you need to get basic infrastructure up and running (steel plate, construction components, motors, computers, displays and power cells allow the construction of a basic assembler and refinery and a battery to power them). Spiders and unknown signal loot do not, as neither provide a way to create power sources of any kind.
Adding power cells to their drop tables in ContainerTypes.sbc would make surviving by hunting things other than wolves viable. Or giving spiders girders and interior plates would also work - the idea of making a wind turbine out of spider legs (girders) amuses me :-)
Adding medical components to unknown signals' drop table would work too (it'd allow you to build a survival kit using the power from a couple of signal sources), if you want some variety.
