Unable to connect to friend's game

On the day I first played Space Engineers I was able to setup a friends only game with my Steam friend able to join. Since then I have tried again multiple times and it has not shown the game on the friends view. We've also tried the other way around with my friend starting the game and it is the same.
I have also tried creating a public game which doesn't show either. Is there a reason for this, or some way of finding what games a friend has started?
