Search function and diacritics (é, è, ô, etc.)

Something a bit banal for you.
In the French settings, and I assume other languages, you have to respect diacritics when making a search query.
Example: Éléphant ≠ Elephant
It's an issue because normally applications and search engines permit you to query without it.
Multilinguals tend to forgo using them by experience, so it caused me a confusion for longer than I care to admit, but I got used to it.
Not a programmer, I wonder if it's a quick fix, as in binding all variations of a letter to a letter, or maybe I'm questing you to fix a hubcap by going through the sunroof?
