I think the game needs some more deadly enemies in space so building large star destroyers and other big battle ships will have a purpose.
Large pirate stations, military dreadnoughts, alien ships. There are a lot of possibilities.
I think these big ships could start appearing after player has made some progress because getting your first spaceship and getting immediatly destroyed by a big battle ship might be frustrating.
Shields might be cool too, because many battles end with a LOT of weilding even if you win.
