My NPC/AI rework request/suggestion
I am fully aware that one, this has been asked before, and two that reworking AI is not easy and can be taxing on a system if not handled properly. However, I feel that for many of us who play SP or small MPs with friends, that the current implementation of AI controlled vessels feel lackluster. Now you could leave the current system in place for those that would rather have it however, I would like to offer an alternative.
I suggest that if possible to have permeant stations generate on planets, moons and in space either as standalone stations or even on asteroids.(or you could just make prefabs that have an asteroid incorporated into the build) and then have ships spawn from these that follow so kind of patrol path.
Now I would love to see these ship actually preform tasks like mining or transporting cargo from one station to another and even a whole territory control system that both ai and player factions could take advantage of, however I fell that may be a little to ambitious and I am no developer so I don't really know what Is possible, but i would hope that just some simple permanent(until we destroy them) bases with ships coming out of them would be a much better way of implementing NPCs and NPC factions and giving the map more of a lived in sense and providing a goal and a reason to build war ships beyond just enjoyment of building, which is a valid reason but I feel there could be just more. Besides you guys are already working on warfare updates and I feel this would be a great addition to reinforce them as well. Also this should go without saying, but the whole system needs to be open to modding so the community can do what it does best and innovate and help show new a better ways of doing things.
Also I will be joining the discord soon If this is a topic you would like to discuss further as I am open to trying to brainstorm over this because this is the biggest feature I what to see added to this game.
