Equal mass refining - Don't discount Einstein!

When refining any ore, excluding stone, I think, there is a loss of net mass due to there only being so much of the mineral in the ore. But what's the rest? This should be ston right? Thus it should turn out a fair bit of gravel as well so that the mass before and after refining is equal.


As things stand, mass is destroyed, which should mean a ton of energy is expelled to make up for the loss. (E=mc^2) Thermodynamics people! ;)
