Laser detector/range finder - (to assist precision tunneling)

A sensor that could intercept the beam between an active antenna pair.
The sensor could allow for navigation and orientation control along the beam and measure distance from the sensor to one of the antennas.
I remember seeing something similar to this, as a transport mechanism, in the first Tron film.
