SE2 Suggestion: consumables as production requirements

Currently, production requires electricity and just the ores and ingots necessary to make the desired ingot or component.
In SE2, I'd like to see refineries, assemblers, and all other production blocks be able to add consumables to the recipes to manufacture ingots or components. Consumables could be gases, ingots (products made in a refinery-style block), or even components. These consumables would not become part of any component or ingot, but simply expended in the production process.
There are several different modding possibilities and ways to change gameplay, if that level of flexibility is already built into the game engine. Vanilla gameplay would not have to change at all as the recipes for vanilla items can remain exactly the same. It's just the engine under it will have more possibilities.
This change might be doable in SE1. But I think it stands a better chance of being in SE2.
