3000 Blocks = 1 Structure. Is it possible?
Hi all,
After playing a few games for many, many hours. The reoccurring issue that jumps out at me is that the player base always wants to build gigantic structures/vehicles. And rightly so.....
The problem obviously being that as soon as you get a couple of vehicles with a high block count having a battle, the FPS takes a dive. We all know why, it's because the game is having to compute the positions/states of all the individual blocks. This, as we all know, can reach the 10's of thousands, if it's a large battle.
But you only have a battle that big, once, because of the issue.
When a base/vehicle is being built, would it not be possible to convert the finished (multi-blocked) base/vehicle into a single structure. Such as the hull of a ship or the walls etc. of a base?
Then when physical effects are applied, they're applied to the structure as a whole and not each and every individual block.
I was thinking that you could even have settings for the rendering of the ships hull/bases shell to have it more curvy or sharp......if you get what i mean.
If you wanted to edit the 'shape', you could then have the game render it back into individual blocks ready for editing.
This would mean that you only see blocks when building/editing a shape, which will only add to the immersion.
Yes, there would need to be some work done for when the structure get's damaged, but you're only working out the damage for 1 structure and not 3000 individual blocks. With all those free processing clicks you should be able to have some nice effects.
Obviously i'm no developer or programmer, just my 2 cents worth.
