Creative Placement Bug is back?

Hi!
I'm having the most frustrating experience every time I select a block from my toolbar it is defaulted to free placement. Is there a way to disable free placement, the worst mode of all, or rebind to another key, or a mod available to quickfix? This is an infuriating bug as it forces you to constantly click, double tap b, click, double tap b. That's fine, except when you spend hundreds of hours playing that's tens of thousands of presses.
Anyone have a fix available? I'm not sure I can deal with the pain of playing it much longer,
