Putting a group with sub-groups on cockpit hotbar crashes game

I found that you can crash the game following this sequence of events:
1. Create a group.
2. Make multiple sub groups within that group.
3. If you now add the master group to the hotbar, the game crashes.
I had this situation work fine when I had one one sub-group of two hydrogen thrusters and the rest of the hydrogen thrusters were part of the master group. But when I created 6 sub-groups of 2 small connectors each, all under a master group of all the sub-groups, the game always crashed when I tried adding the master group to the cockpit hotbar.
