Lived after crash
I'm not sure what happened, but when I first played the tutorial, I accidentally crashed the first ship when I tried to lower my height and did not stop soon enough. The ship crashed into the trees so hard that the ship literally converted to particles. No trees or ground were harmed in the making of that crash (literally, no tree damage, no crater, no nothing.)
I was expecting a death cutscene, but that never occurred. Finally, I tried to move and realized I was just standing on the surface and could literally run to the base.
I didn't continue on with the game to find out if I could continue the mission, and on restart I have not been able to replicate the bug yet. Second try resulted in the death cut scene, but the ship hit the ground instead of trees. The respawn was all the way back at the pod, so I'd have to run 6.5 km to get to my backpack and 7.3 km to get to the Outpost.
