Massive lags during drilling

After playing for a few minutes, extreme lag occurs during drilling.
Whether using a hand drill or a drilling rig, as soon as the ground is removed, there's a lag that gets progressively longer.
And even when the drilling rig is out of sight, lags still occur whenever the drill head bores away a piece of earth.
