thrust/damper acting wrong

On Kemik, taking off in a H2-powered ship with thrusters in every direction. Plenty of up thrust.
I started with dampers on, then when I had some altitude & speed I turned them off
I kept the space bar jammed down to accelerate upwards
ship immediately loses speed & begins to fall
when I flick on the 'Z' the up-thrust has effect again
Looking at the ship in external view, the up-thrusters continued to fire even though the ship was falling
Must be some little coding glitch in there somewhere... :)
