Hole in planet from space?

While flying back to the contract terminal in space, I noticed a sudden reflection/hole in the planet with "burning embers" in it. It looks like flames are flickering even when the game is paused at the menu.
When I look towards the spot, the "hole" disappears.
It reappears again when I look towards the station. I added a red arrow to the final image to point out its location. The "flames" appear to have drifted out of the "reflection", so I'm wondering if they're relative to the engines.
However, that doesn't explain why they are still flickering when the game is on the pause menu.
