Freezing Lag when too close to large grids

I've discovered that with very large grids (large for SE2 not SE1) that everything flows and works great except for when the character or ship get within about 5-10 blocks of the massive grid. I also noticed minor similar lag when two entities are close to each other as if the collision detection may be checking for contact on the entire grid(s) or perhaps the entire grid are being re-rendered in the background because the time frame of the large\massive grid lag seems to be about the time it would take to render the image in SE2.
