Nickel instead of all stone?

i have not played since its first release and now i'm back but all i get when digging is nickel. let me elaborate ores exist detectors work fine but when i am digging to any ore all the "stone" i have to dig through is nickel, i have more than i could ever need wtf is up with that is it intentional or is it a bug i'm experiencing?

It's a feature. You can get iron, nickel, and silicon from various soil types.
If you don't want to gather, use the right-click drill mode. It's faster, has a bigger effect radius, and you won't get any ores.
