Ice not findable via ore detector on starting planet

I spent hours flying around with no hits on the ore detector I stuck on my ship in the tutorial campaign. I eventually found out on forums snow from mountaintops gave ice. Unfortunately, snow does not detect as ice to the ore detector.
Considering this seems to be the only source of it until you get to space, I'm suggesting you either add deposits that can be detected, or let snow count for the ore detector, it caused a lot of confusion and wasted about 5 hours of me circling the planet trying to find ice.
