Ship orientation control with mouse was better in SE1 (and at the start of SE2)
New target based control solves some problems but adds even more:
1. When something rotates your ship unexpectedly, for example, when you get stuck in some trees or collide with your base, I, and probably many others, want to adapt to the situation and make a decision from the new point of view, but with this new system, the camera just points where it was, and it's difficult to see what is happening in front of your ship, how your ship is oriented right now, and how to do the right thing to avoid crashing or escape from trees. Moreover, the ship is continuing to rotate, trying to align, and sometimes it makes it even harder to avoid crashing.
2. Parking is harder: in SE1 you can push 'C' to make the ship go down to align with the space station surface, but now in SE2, your gyro does not allow you to stay in the aligned position, while your camera is not horizontaly aligned - which is actually hard to do precisely. Docking using a connector is good, no comment, but in this case it's about parking with no connector; just place the ship well on the surface.
3. The circle cursor has a very weird behavior. When you are trying to rotate the ship, it's like fighting with it: it starts moving, and then it goes back to the center of the screen. It's moving very twitchy. It would be better if it just stayed in the center of the screen, and when you are moving the mouse, the camera would be moving, but the circle better be staying in the center.
In SE1, indeed, there was a problem with rotating big ships, but it could be solved using arrow keys (just push, and no need to move the mouse like crazy) or using just more gyros.
In SE2 mentioned problems are for every ship and for the whole control.
Maybe it will be enough just to remove the twitching of the circle cursor, making it stable, but the best solution, in my opinion, is to make a toggle in game settings or in the cockpit in-game control panel between classic or target based control.
