Exterior armour skins could be affected by where in the star system.
The painted skin on the ship or base could age over time.
Temperature and mud could make a difference too.
The skin could be refreshed with the use of a maintenance tool.

I like the Lego look of SE, but the new planets look fantastic and the Lego look makes some builds look like toys in a diorama. A build skin that is affected by its surroundings may help to make the build feel more of a part of the setting.
