[MAJOR CRASH] Graphics Driver Crash Error since 1/3/19 update

Reyoness shared this bug 8 months ago
In Progress

Hello. Since the update today, Myself and everyone on my server are constantly crashing out every 5 - 10 minutes with the warning message that our Graphics drivers have crashed due to overheating/overclocking and what not (When all our card temps and general health is fine). We all have been playing since the big release with no issue on this server until today's update.

I have the same issue, 1080ti capped at 60fps, so it is not the graphics card. Was fine prior to the patch.

photo
4

this may also be on nvidias end since i got this problem as soon as i updated the drivers

photo
4

3 of us all on nvidias latest drives 419.17

1080ti crashes around 20mins

1070 does not crash at all (is the host pc)

1060 crashes after a couple of minutes

photo
4

Me and a few friends are also having this issue. Setting things to medium helps but it still crashes at times. i collected a few logs and ordered them. Here they are in a zip file

photo

6 of us on a private dedicated server are experiencing this crashing issue after updating to the recent update. (All nvidia gpus)

Seems to be a rendering bug from the log

Having similar problems.

Started a server with friends 27/02/19, crashing started after the 01/03/19 update. Was running fine up until then, but now it's persistently CTD'ing after circa 5-10min in-game and blaming my GPU.

EDIT: Spelling

photo

I have the same crashing issues since yesterday. Good to know that i am not the only one. Running a MSI GTX 970

photo
2

Having the same issue, and at least 3 friends reported this crash as well.

Before the last hotfix, this wasn't happening.

photo
3

Yeah this issue is driving me crazy. About 50+ of these crashes this weekend since the update. Can we roll back a version please?

photo
3

Me and 6 friends are ALL having this issue since the survival update. All on latest nvidia drivers as far as I know (419.17)

Dmp and log files + dxdiag in .rar file.

photo
1

In case you cant read .rar files

photo
photo
1

Also updated drivers. Same issue. This has been going on since yesterdays update. Over 900 hours played and first time seeing this bug. Crash happens to EVERYONE on my dedi server at the same time

photo
2

Same issue, CTD every few minutes. I've tried deleting the shader cache folders, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, clean install of the game and verifying files but nothing has helped.

photo
1

Same here. The Card runs fine at 45-50°C (1050ti)

But its still crashes for all 6 of us (Only in MP)

photo
2

Yes, this is what i have also experienced. I wanted to get my friends into Space Engineers and this is the bug they were experiencing.

Sadly I don't think it's going to be easy now to convince them to come back even if it does get fixed. Which is a shame, I was really enjoying this game. Don't worry I'll keep trying (well once this is fixed)

I do think the wording for the bug popup was a bit misleading. No GPU was above 70C and we were all on the laster NVIDIA drivers (as of Sat 2nd March 19).

Looking forward to seeing this fixed before I buy

same for me... 3 crashes just today

photo
photo
1

Heard of lots of people having this problem on our server discord. I've had similar issues myself, although in that case the GPU temps reached 80 C...

photo
1

So, it takes a good 5 minutes AT LEAST off peak and upto 30minutes at busy times to actually get onto a server because there is only 16 slots (which isnt a problem really) but when I crash 5+ a day then to wait to log back in it gets a little frustrating.... Any response???

photo

RTX 2080, I had quite the laugh when it said it was overheating. The bloody thing is water cooled!

photo

Hi guys,

thanks for your reports. We are working on it.

Have a dedicated server.

It keeps on crashing with with this error at random intervals. all from 2 minutes to 2 hours

Happens to all people i'm playing with, Different cards.

I have GXT 690. The others (that I know of) have GTX 690, 1050, 1060 and 1080.

Same error for all of us at totally random intervals.

photo
2

Hi Phyrino,

new hotfix 1.189.041 should help. Please let us know if it is ok or not.

Kind Regards

Ondřej Nahálka, QA Lead

photo
1

It worked for a while.

after 1h and 20 minutes I got that the program was not responding and then the same error message and crash to desktop.

photo
1

Played another hour and a half with no crashes.

The two I played with today suffered no crashes. So it seems to be (mostly) fixed.

photo
1

Had this issue once before 1.189.041 (lucky me I guess)

After patch, my first time joining server the graphics card freezes my entire computer.... so I guess... worse?

photo
1

Played the majority of the evening yesterday after the hotfix without a single crash or issue. Gonna give it another session before I give it a verdict just to be a bit more certain.

photo
1

Today I had one crash after 10 minutes and one after 90 minutes.

photo
1

This is likely not actually a gfx crash. I was getting this kind of crash report when testing a mod. In MY case it turned out I had a bad copy/paste in my planet file that removed a < from the middle of the file. Why this translated into a gfx crash is likely because the process that depended on that file loading is where the crash happened, when it should have occured in the object serializer.

photo
1

I am still having this issue. Once it happens a single time it then happens within a few seconds of running a game.

photo
photo
1

It didn't feel like a graphic error to us.

But the server we are running is a vanilla.

no mods, no experimental mode.

But it seems to be fixed.

no crashes for the last two days.

Well done Keen!

photo
1

I Still have this Issue together with a Friend. Im running a GTX 760Ti with newest drivers. Even did a fresh install. Im also underclocking it and not even reaching 80 Degrees. A friend of mine is having the same problem

photo
1

Do you play with mods? If so, try to play without a bit. Just to make sure it's not one of them that's messing with you.

now I play without experimental mode. Just to troubleshoot the problem and the error has disappeared.

Then add one mod at a time and try it out.

hope that fixes it.

photo
photo
1

Since the last patch, It is still happening, Its tries to suggest I'm running out of memory and my gpu is overheating, Neither of which are true. gpu load is around 30-40 percent on high on my 1080ti and I have 32gb of ram, this is preventing me from playing at all as it happens on loading any world, I used to run Space Engineers on ultra with no issues at all. I dont use mods and it happens on fresh worlds

Please get this fixed,

photo
1

Mine displays this message on startup, i can't even get into the menu. Gforce 980 and temperatures around 40°C.

photo
1

Hello, I can't even start SE, says I need to apply windows updates and graphics drivers which I did update, is this issue connected with this topic?

photo
1

I am experiencing a similar error on an AMD setup running an 8gb 590. It appears to happen within about 10 minutes of loading a world. The actual error message in-game is that my graphics card is overheating (it's not). Memory leak or garbage collection problem?

Glad (in a way) that I'm not the only one getting this problem. It's also nice to see a variety of systems being effected, I was worried it was an RTX card issue.

It's a shame because i love the new release, I'd just like to be able to play for more than 20/30 minutes at a time.

photo
1

I have the same problem with graphics card AMD RX580 game will not allow update. return to the old version of the driver then functional

photo
1

I believe I have the same problem on 1.189.044 version as of 3/21/2019 on Nvidia Gtx 1060 drivers updated yes.

photo
1

Please revisit this bug. New versions not playable, I think that this is pretty high in priority.

photo
2

I dont know hwy, but since testerday we are having the same problem, but just two of our team that were on an asteroid

photo
2

Same Issue since yesterday for me... on an Asteroid CTD every 2-5 minutes... updated drivers GTX 670

photo
1

Bought yesterday, can't even start modify my character, only setting page i can access before freezing, not even able to start the game.

My system : I7 3.2Ghz 24Gb ram Win7 64 bit SSD 500 Gb. 2 x Nvidia GTX 560 Ti in SLI dual Monitor 23" Full HD

I don't think that my system is low on resources.

Tried to low the graphic settings to the minimum, and nothing, freeze computer or restart, video driver crash, (i have the latest video drivers for my GPU, and win 7 is fully upgraded.

photo
1

For those who have problems even playing do what I did, revert to version 188 this is in properties of the game in steam you can select a different version under the Betas tab

photo
1

This require an urgent fix. Reverting version is just not possible when playing on a public server.

photo
1

I was having this exact problem consistently on my dedicated server where it was effecting all connected clients however occurred most when in battle. We figured out it was caused by the Ammo Info mod, removed that and have not had this problem even once since :) PS when it gives you a message saying "Graphics driver crash" it has nothing to do with your graphics and is a generic message for "something happened and we have no clue what". If your driver really did crash you would defiantly know about it, if you have ever booted a pc in safe mode with all drivers disabled that is what it would look like if it crashed. Gaming would be impossible

photo
1

Strange because I don't have that ammo mod, I have no mods and it was happening for me and my friend (who also has no mods). Multiple times this was happening. It is an issue with many game features crashing the game with this version. Unfortunately I or many people can't play this version because of this and I know I would definitely enjoy the more challenging changes.

photo
1

Hello, Engineers!

We are really sorry some of you are still experiencing this issue.

There was a hotfix which resolved hundreds of crashes caused by issue on our side but there other issues we are aware of.

We are certain mods can cause this crash so please check if you are playing with some of them and let the authors know about it.

If you are experiencing this issue in vanilla game, it will most likely be issue with drivers which we are trying to resolve together with GPU and driver providers. (It's happening only on some GPUs/drivers.)

We apologize for any inconveniences caused by this crash and would like to thank you for cooperation.

We are closing this thread based on fixed regression. If you are still experience this, please let us know in new thread with logs and your GPU + driver info.

Kind Regards

Hey Ales what driver works with the version? Have you tested it with a certain version to know which one is stable? I have GTX1060 nvidia with drivers 419.35 there was an update with 419.67 that came out a few days ago so I will try this to see if it helps.

photo
2

Hi Michael,

unfortunately I have personally never experienced this crash by myself so I can't really certainly tell..

Please when you finish trying this let me know how it went!

photo
1

Sure I will update you today in an hour or two Ales. Thank you very much!

photo
photo
1

** Update: I updated to graphics drivers (Nvidia 419.67 released 3/25/19) I have a GTX 1060 so far I played 2 hours and no crashing!!! I am not sure if it s gone for good but it seemed as though the driver update has at least improved something. Again 2 hours of play after updated gpu driver and no crashes! I believe the 419.65 version of the driver should help others!

photo
1

Hi MIchael,

thanks for the retest!

We hope this will help more players.

Hey Ales, you guys are most welcome I love the game and I refuse to have anything hinder it. Happy Friday have fun out there!

If any of you are still crashing despite all this. It's your Discord Overlay if you have one Disable it, and that will fix the graphics driver crashing problem.

photo
1

Nice catch Ambassador

photo
1

Remember to be on 419.67 driver version as this also fixes it. I had crashing with no discord before the update.

photo
1

cant see what im typing at all

photo
1

anyway, im still having problems with the game after rolling back my dr

photo
photo
1

i cant see what im rtyping this is really frustrating please email me nopey96@gmail.com i need help with rolling back my driver this

photo
1

Top right corner of the reply box is a code box, click it, by default its on and some reason it disable text. Also what do you mean having problems. It crashes for you? What is your GPU driver version?

photo
1

Workarounds... Its time for a fix. Everything at Keen is deprecating. I feels like i could do their job easily without knowing a single line of code. Also why is it so god damn hard to fix issues? Is there only 1 dev?

photo
1

Still crashing, not using Discord.

I haven't seen a crash while actually playing though. Every time it's been while the game was paused and I had been away from the computer.

So that's possibly an improvement

photo
1

I agree Hypogriph its been awhile apparently that this problem has been existing for many people, over months of time but Keen co is still streaming on twitch before making stable releases. I speak the truth and updating a gpu driver is not that hard but the game should not be like this since January (going off the title of this OP). You guys need to check the driver and just use 419.67 wicked easy to do. No crashes for me for hours on latest version when I used to crash every 30 minutes around over and over again.

photo
photo
1

Game is still crashing with this fault. I have latest drivers installed (419.67), no discord running.

photo
1

i have this same problem. all driver up to date i dont even have discord or apps running in the background at all but SE remains totally unplayable for me ATM

photo
1

@ Malcolm have you tried changing the in game settings to all High if possible? My settings are on high and sometimes certain settings can cause like a memory leak (GPU or RAM leak).

@ Alex what driver do you have 419.67? Check your settings too put them on high. I have no issues on this gpu driver with settings on high.

Try a new save for test. I used to crash every 15 minutes now I play for 3 hours plus and no problems. All I changed was the driver. I even use discord while playing with my friend. I also updated to 190 version of game and no problems so I firmly believe it is something with the nvidia driver not working or a setting issue.

photo
1

litterally done everything i can nothing works

photo
photo
1

Oh and no mods I dont use mods

photo
1

I had this issue aswell. I was able to temporarily fix it by changing the tdr delay to 8 in registry. however now it is happening again.

photo
4

The devs should unsolve this lol many people still have the problem... so guess what its not solved guys.

photo
5

This is NOT solved, and it's a boldfaced lie as well. The graphics driver is NOT crashing, and the graphics card is NOT overheating. My friend with a GTX 2070 with 3 freaking fans on it is getting this.

photo
1

Try going into registry editor and changing TdrDelay to 8 and TdrLevel to 3. This fixed it for me, but be careful changing registries always comes at a risk. I'd recommend looking up how to find and change these two before hand.

photo
1

For me it was the driver the minute I went to the 419.67 it was all better, Also it could be a graphics setting, I have all high settings. Medium could cause the crash. I played for 10 hours no crashes. 190 version of game now.

photo
3

I completely redownload drivers and still got the crash, it also wasn't the settings as I got 100fps at ultra until the crash. It seems as though this issue can be caused by a number of things. For me it was fixed by changing the registry.

photo
3

Crazy wow hey a little help Devs yoo hoo lol.

photo
6

This is NOT solved.

photo
4

this issue is not resolved

photo
2

Apparently this is an issue with GTX cards????

photo
3

No, it is the same on my RTX 2060

photo
1

That's because this message is a scam meant to hide their bad code.

photo
1

Nothing is fixed, the crash still exists. But yeah Keen need months for fixing a gamebreaking bug, nice work!

photo
2

The crash still exist

photo
1

This crash still exists. This isn't solved. Please, please I have done a complete wipe of my windows system to fix this and the game is still broken. I just want to play the game I payed money for. Is that too hard to ask?

photo
2

The crash still exists. NOT SOLVED!

photo
1

yha got tha same message and an ton of lag ingame when you finaly almost build someting and then got the inventory lag they realy need to make the game less high end so other people can play aswel you need an pc from around the 10k euro to play this game perfect

and dusnt make an difrents if people use mods it sill mustl work

photo
2

Crash still isn't fixed. Have a new RTX 2070 Super and it happens quite regularly. Suspected graphics card being broken, but came out of the benchmarks perfectly. Suspected broken memory, found all memory in good order after memtest.

photo
1

Still happening. Windows 10 latest patches. Mobile RTX 2080 card. 16GB RAM. Intel i7 CPU. Latest nvidia drivers too.

I was able to once load to the main menu, and was getting about 10 FPS before it crashed.

photo
1

I'm getting this crash with increasing frequency, along with BSoD crashes and crashes without any error message at all.

Using a Ryzen 2600, 16GB of 3200Mhz RAM, RX 5700 XT, so I very highly doubt it'd be any kind of running out of resources issue. CPU and graphics card are water cooled and are most certainly not having any heat issues.

I really want to play me some Space Engineers, but I'm crashing about 15 seconds after loading into a game, and if I don't crash that quickly it's just a matter of time.

photo
photo
1

Game crashes after up to 1min in the game. Clean installation, no mods were used.

Issue occurs with 100% rate.

I was using Acer Predator Helios 300.

Specification:Intel Core I7-9750h

GeForce RTX 2060

16GB RAM

Game installed on SSD

Log has been attached.

photo
1

I've looked into history of this bug, and it is sad that this issue still occurs. It's very hard to believe that after half of the year nothing happened. It's like very critical issue. How it's still happening?

photo
2

Can confirm, is still happening. I did a private thread on their support forums and they said they'd do something about it several weeks ago. I just want to play the game :(

photo
1

Im running a

I 9900 intel chip

msi 360 bazooka motherboard

32g gaming ram

h100 watercooler

2070 msi rtx armor g force card

700w power supply

i love this game but either the game

1)stops and freezes my whole PC

2)bombs out and tell me my GPU is overheating when its actually at 45 degrees

3)stops and give me a windows error blue screen

this happens about 20 to 25 times a day and seems to increase when i build big buildings etc . impossible to play

My friend with his cheap cpu doesnt get this problems with the game and ive even tried running lower graphics settings and underclocking my gpu and pushing the fan speed up.

is there a fix for this please

photo
1

What version are you on? What windows? I haven't had any crashes for hours. How much virtual ram?

photo
1

I'm on current patch, Windows 10 (also updated), VRAM: 5980 MB.

photo
1

Ok hmm not video ram but swap file (virtual ram) in right click computer > properties > advanced

How much physical ram also? Memory leaks are very common.

photo
1

Guys, I think we should all recognize the obvious: this crash message is a catch-all meant to pass the blame from Keen's poor programming to peoples' computers. It's meant to make the less tech-savvy people think there's something wrong with their system instead of the fact that the game is a buggy mess which they refuse to fix, instead focusing on selling you premium blocks. I can't believe they're even trying to release this mess on Xbox. It's going to be a disaster.

photo
1

I have no crashes on 193 it's strange. I think it could be a virtual ram problem or more likely video driver specific version issue.

photo
1

It's crashing on different hardware with also more than adequate ram so it must be a specific graphic setting. I have no crashes at all. 1060gtx 16gb ram ssd 8th gen i5 3.6ghz. Drivers up to date and highest game version. Test different graphic setting profile guys.

photo
1

I will try other settings, but drivers are up-to-date.

photo
1

Ok, I think I've found a reason. It seems the issue is connected to my laptop Turbo Boost technology and high quality settings, and it seems to be connected to the GPU boost specifically. I'm always using default boost setting for the games before start. As I mentioned earlier, I'm using Acer Predator Helios 300, so I have PredatorSense to manage speed of the fans, GPU etc.

These are my repro steps for this bug:

1. Launch the game

2. Go to the Options

3. Open Graphics

4. Set Quality Preset to High

5. Open PredatorSense

6. Find Overclocking

7. Use Extreme setting

8. Return to the game

9. Wait until game crash

Issue doesn't occur with other settings but High.

This desperately needs to be addressed. There shouldn't be any additional content released until this is resolved, let alone sold. What I once regarded as the single greatest game of all time has been reduced to nothing but blue screens and misguiding error messages, this is a fatal and game killing issue, I have supported this game since it's release and after nearly a full year of this thread's existence so many of us are left with no real solution, update, or hope. As more of us continue to upgrade our hardware and are subjected to this issue, I believe that we will watch a sustained diminishing of player support, and perhaps even the death of Space Engineers.

photo
1

Hello, I leave my problem which starts at 30-40 mins (approx) after playing on a server (MP), My computer throws the blue screen of death.. Apparently it's the same problem as many users. With the last update I got this error that the truth has saddened me for not being able to play Space Engineers.

I hope you have some solution within these days, as it only happens to me with Space Engineers :(. Greetings from Chile.

attached my setup:

CPU: AMD FX8350 8-core 4.9 Ghz

GPU: MSI Radeon R9270

RAM: 16 Gb DDR3 1866 MHz

photo
1

Have you guys tried it without a dedicated server? I play fine for hours in MP with just the non-dedicated method through the main menu. Also my friend and my son plays fine too using this method. That's 3 computers with different hardware all working fine with no crashing...

photo

To everyone getting BSODs or PC freezes, I know the pain. It can be any of a bunch of issues, but it is rarely an application's or game's sole fault nowadays because operating systems limit direct access to the hardware. There is usually some intermediary like Windows, DirectX or the graphics driver that could check for problems. Examples: Game keeps GPU in endless loop: Windows will reset the driver and the game will have to react to that or crash. Notebook GPU runs too hot? The driver throttles it. CPUs do the same. (Unless it is so full of dust that even that wont help :o) )

The more likely reason for a freeze are some power, timing or heat issues in other components or simply bugs and oversights in the operating system, drivers or low-level system software. If different driver versions do not help, I'd check the following:

  • Is the RAM running with custom timings? Did you mix different models for a quick upgrade? Memory tests cannot put the same load on the system (e.g. power draw and heat) that a game does. Room temperature and humidity also have their influence.
  • Power supply units may become insufficient after a hardware upgrade or due to old age. The most demanding piece of hardware is the GPU and SE is taxing in that department on planets. Symptoms can be anything: reboots, power off, memory errors, PC freezes, rendering artifacts or just a blank screen. PSU manufacturers sometimes have an online tool that allows you to specify your system components and get a list of usable PSUs for that - generally below the generic recommendation of the GPU manufacturer.
  • Are mainboard temperatures good? Try with an open case and a table fan blowing air onto the mainboard. Sometimes mainboards were not prepared for power hungry new CPUs.
  • Is anything in the Event Viewer leading up to or directly related to the freeze or BSOD? Maybe the failing component can be identified there.

A software developer can't fix a bug the she can't reproduce somehow (or make an educated guess about). If Windows BSODs on a few systems, that's almost guaranteed to be considered an individual driver/system stability issue for the time being until a pattern emerges. The OP describes a situation where the system keeps running fine after the game crashes with a specific message and it happened to several people at the same time on the server. To help identify the severity and track the status of a bug it helps to keep it to that specific issue.

It has to be the dedicated server. I run 3 clients on a non dedicated game with no issues 3 different computers.

Recently my GF started to experience similar issue. Whenever we tried to play Lost Colony scenario she would get crash after crash. After some testin i think it may be related to excessive memory usage by SE or memory leak.

So recently i decided to try out new scenario with my girfriend. It runs fine for me. But when my GF wants to join it takes ages to get into the game, and then her game crashes very often. I did check RAM usage, and mine (host) was about 7-8GB while hers went to 13GB and essentially took all of it. Once the crash happens she gets two popup messages. One saying that GFX driver crashed, and the second that she ran out of RAM.

Even whe she tried to host the scenario, i got connected while she was in the loading screen for a good while longer. And the RAM usage was still nearly double of mine. We have the same computers, GFX drivers updated, and SE is the only app running at the time.

On steam forum I was told that SE would normally took about 2GB of ram. so i did few more tests and it seems to behave the same on my machine as well. It is just not as visible as I have more RAM on it.

I am quite surprised to hear game uses only about 2GB for you. For both me and my GF it does use 2GB ONLY at fresh start in main menu. Once i start new world it will go between 4-6GB and mostly stay this way. After i quit to main menu however it will stay at about 3.7-4GB RAM. Frequent loading game, quiting to menu and reloading again seem to intensify this, however i didn't manage to make it above 7GB ingame and 5GB in menu this way.

Things get much worse when i try Lost colony scenario. On both our machines RAM usage was very high. My GF system gaves up and crashes at about 11GB. Mine have more ram installed and i could observe the game to consume 15GB of ram in peak and then stabilisie at about 11-12GB. Once i quit to main menu ram usage remained at 7GB.

In my oppinion there is some memory leak. All my testing was done with no mods and on new saves. Wether save was offline or not did not make much difference. Other scenarios or custom worlds were below 6GB. Lost colony seems to double the ram usage. But even on normal worlds ram seems higher than supposed as well.

Below are the log files. I dont think i need to attach machines specs, as they are included in the logs.

First one may be a bit long as i first tried to create/save/reload repeatedly on new survival world to see ram usage. After that i created Lost colony save and it crashed on loading.

Second time i created lost colony world right after launching the game to avoid accumulated Ram usage from reloading. It did load but crashed soon after.

Third one is on my second laptop which has 32GB ram. It did not crash, ran smooth, but i could observe high ram usage. After some time driving around, when nothing more happened I did save and quit, then copied the log.

Here are all the logs plus some screens i took while having task manager on screen to monitor ram usage while testing.

Originally I had an AMD RX 580 4GB and had this problem. What fixed it for me was buying an Nvidia GTX 2060 6GB and replacing the 580 with that. Not sure if this helps anyone else, but just in case it does, this is what I did to fix my problem.

Hi, Everyone.

Thank you for reporting these issues to us.

We have investigated these problems extensively on our side and unfortunately, we need to cooperate with NVIDIA in order to address these issues.

We realize that the text is not correct (it is not caused by the GPU overheating), but we don't know what is causing this problem.

We are currently in talks with NVIDIA and we hope to resolve these issues soon once we've heard back from them.

Thanks again and we appreciate your patience.
