game no longer lauches fully

First time I've tried to play since the update.
Everything looks fine - I get to the options screen (creative, survival, etc) - I've tried launching both a new modded and a new vanilla (no mod) version (several times) - it gets to 18% - and then completely hangs, eventually CTD. I've made no hardware changes, or software location changes.
I have the same bug Access denied
Okay - so I did some tinkering.
Uninstalled & reinstalled game - no effect
Updated gfx drivers - no effect
Reduced gfx settings to medium (from high) - no effect
Reduced gfx settings to low - managed to load both a vanilla game & a modded game.
Opened Saved games - increased gfx settings to medium - and both loaded.
